Phylogeny and evolutionary radiation in seasonal rachovine killifishes:
biogeographical and taxonomical implications (Costa 2014)
Abstract
A phylogenetic analysis combining available mitochondrial DNA sequences (total of 3,339 bp) and 161 morphological characters for 22 species of rachovine genera (Aphyolebias, Austrofundulus, Gnatholebias, Llanolebias, Micromoema, Moema, Neofundulus, Pterolebias, Rachovia, Renova, Terranatos, and Trigonectes), and 16 outgroups, supports monophyly of the group containing genera endemic to the Orinoco river basin and adjacent coastal drainages. Results of the present analysis are compared to previous studies. The tree topology indicates that the genera Moema and Rachovia as presently delimited are paraphyletic; consequently, Aphyolebias and Austrofundulus are respectively placed in the synonymy of Moema and Rachovia. This study also indicates that rachovines were in the past geographically restricted to the Amazonas-Paraguay area where diversification in niche exploitation was constrained by competition with sympatric members of older seasonal fish lineages. Rachovines later reached the Orinoco basin and adjacent coastal drainages by dispersal through the Paleo-Amazonas river basin, when major evolutionary radiation taken place.

Moema apurinan sp. n. and Aphyolebias boticarioi sp. n. (Teleostei: Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae): two new annual killifishes from the Rio Purus basin, Brazilian Amazon
Abstract
Two new annual fishes are described from the upper Rio Purus drainage, Amazonian basin, northern Brazil. Moema apurinan, new species, is similar to M. staecki, these two species distinguished from other congeners in having contact organs on scales of the flank in males, an acuminate caudal fin, fewer pectoral-fin rays, fewer vertebrae, and a narrower rostral cartilage. Moema apurinan differs from M. staecki in having a longer pectoral fin and a wider basihyal. Moema apurinan is distinguished from all other congeners by possessing fewer caudal-fin rays. Aphyolebias boticarioi, new species, differs from all other congeners by having a deeper body. It is similar to A. rubrocaudatus, A. obliquus, A. claudiae and A. schleseri in having a ventral marginal black stripe on the caudal fin in males. Aphyolebias boticarioi differs from these species by a combination of features including number of anal-fin rays, pectoral-fin rays, vertebrae and gill-rakers, and color patterns.

Moema beucheyi (Teleostei: Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae), a new annual killifish from the Río Madeira basin, Bolivian Amazon
Abstract
Moema beucheyi, new species, is described from a seasonal pool in the Río San Miguel drainage, Río Madeira basin, Bolivian Amazon. The new taxon is similar to M. heterostigma, M. ortagai/M. quiii, M. pepotei, and M. piriana in that males possess filamentous rays on the pectoral-fin tips, and to M. heterostigma and M. ortegai in exhibiting an orange color pattern on the body and fins. M. beucheyi differs from all known congeners by presence of distinctive orange lateral stripe outlined by a series of brown dots on the caudal fin, greenish-grey pigmentation on the ventral portion, and greater numbers of scales in the transverse and circumpeduncular series.

A new annual killifish: Moema funkneri (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) from the Bolivian Amazon. aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology v. 25 (no. 3): 103-110.
Abstract:
A new annual killifish species, Moema funkneri, is described from a seasonal pool in the Río Grande drainage, a tributary of Río Mamoré, Amazon basin, Bolivia. The new taxon is similar to M. heterostigma and M. ortegai/M. quiii by males possess oblique rows of red brown dots on flanks. It differs from all known congeners by the combination of the aforementioned color pattern, short pectoral fins, presence of almost dark yellow anal fin, broad orange margin on ventral and posterior portions of caudal fin, and a relatively high number of scales in the lateral line, transverse series, and circumpeduncular series.

A new species of the seasonal killifish genus Moema (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) from the Piraí watershed in the Southwest Amazon basin
Abstract
Moema, a genus of the Rivulidae family, currently comprises 20 valid species. Most of these species inhabit temporary pools in the Amazon basin and only one species is found in the upper Paraguay basin. A new member of this genus from the upper Río Madeira drainage is here described. Males of the new species differ from all congeners by the combination of a color pattern consisting of oblique, sometimes chevron-like, irregular rows of red and light blue double-dots on body; dark yellowish to golden pectoral fins with no visible markings; and a stripe pattern on the ventral section of caudal fin with a very narrow black marginal line, intermittent or even absent. The existence of infrageneric species groups within Moema, the geographic distribution and taxonomic aspects of the species present in the Ríos Mamoré and Iténez/Guaporé rivers drainages, and the observation of intraspecific aggression between males and amphibious lifestyle in the new species are discussed.
